Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Sign Up

The call which comes from the division is to meet a specific need in a specific location. It is not possible to create a position. Existing openings require specific qualifications and skills, often including a Master's degree, which is necessary for institutional accreditation and government work permits.

While a commitment of five years or more is preferred, due to the high initial cost of placing a family in the field, there are circumstances where shorter appointment terms are an option.

The process takes approximately six months from General Conference approval until departure readiness. Obtaining the necessary work permits/visas may delay departure further.

You receive up to one month before departure to visit family. During service, assistance is given to visit parents and older children located in your base division. Your divisional office provides support for these visits.

Local Seventh-day Adventist schools are preferred. Home schooling and correspondence school are also an option with special approval, as are non-Adventist international schools when needed.

The return of a dependent child to the base division does not affect the term of service for an ISE.

There is educational assistance for dependent children based on the school level, ages of your children, and the school they are attending.

Educational allowance and medical coverage are available for dependent children who stay home or return home to continue their high school or college education in harmony with policy.

Yes. However accompanying children will be expected to stay there at least one year before permanently returning to the base division.

Secondary students receive one ticket per school year for visits. An additional trip is allowed during annual leave if the visit lasts at least 30 days.

Other Policies

Annual leave provides ISEs the opportunity to temporarily leave their overseas assignment and return to their base division country for personal renewal and family connection.

ISEs retain the right to end their mission field assignment. The policy encourages consulting with local organizations and the General Conference before deciding. For departures before 24 months, allowances will be pro-rated per month spent in the field.

Upon completing a term, ISEs may either continue serving another term or request personnel return to their base division, with advance notice needed for planning replacements and logistics.

Notify your employing organization of your request. The organization forwards it through the host division secretariat level and then it will be sent to the General Conference where the PR will be voted through the Mission Board Strategic Operations Committee (MBSOC).

Travel

No personal payment required. All travel arrangements will be made and costs paid by the base division office in consultation with the host division and the ISE.

Housing will be provided either in a church-owned home or as arranged by the division or local host institution with an appropriate rental charge.
